Before 1979 we sold gasoline here in gallons, but we used the imperial (old British) gallon which is 1.20095 American gallons, or 4.54609 litres. Ours was bigger. I remember paying 79 cents (Canadian) for an Imperial (bigger) gallon around the time of the switchover and cursing we'd get screwed over by the gas stations selling 79 cent/ gallon for more than 79/4.54609 = 17.38 cents a liter. Which they did. 19 cent ripoff.
