A220-500, changes are such that the name will be A221 ! Christian Scherer, the commercial director of Airbus, announced in an interview with a journalist specialized in aviation, that the 'upgrade' of the A220, one of the best planes, according to specialists, will be so innovative that more than a version of the 220, it will have an identity of its own as Airbus A221.
Among the novelties that are included are the new wings, engines to suit the client and up to 170 seats, already practically the same as A320. The A220 was actually Bombardier's CS100 and CS300, which Airbus was left assuming the debts of the project.
Airbus is modernizing the plane. Initially it was going to be called A220-500, but the changes are such that it has been preferred to give it a new identity.
The plane starts from a need on the part of Airbus, which Scherer says is the fundamental one: to give the plane much more range, without reaching the level of the A321, but more than usual. And meeting this requirement, the plane could have completely new wings -with new materials-, which would mean a notable aerodynamic improvement, as well as some 20 additional seats up to 170 passengers.https://www.preferente.com/noticias-de-transportes/noticias-de-aerolineas/airbus-anuncia-el-a221-con-hasta-170-asientos-328514.html
