There's nothing horrifying about this data collection. All the systems are doing is collecting licence plate numbers, make model, etc. It's not like they're making a record of what the driver sexual preferences are or the colour of their underpants.
And that traffic data could, at least in theory, be collected by kids sitting at the roadsides with clipboards. These are public spaces.
Now if the cameras were looking through the windshields and keeping tabs on, say, skin colour (or even gender) then, yeah, I'd be right there with the ACLU. But it doesn't sound like that's happening. And I'm sure the courts will be ready to make sure it doesn't happen.
