We’re back with another Segment of #AskArwen, this week we’re talking kitty litter.

Ask Arwen: What’s the difference between non-clumping and clumping cat litter? Which one should I use?

The answer is all in the clay…or clays, in this case! We make our non-clumping, or traditional, cat litter from our diatomaceous earth deposit. Diatomaceous earth is very porous, with excellent absorption capabilities. It has the additional benefit of being able to neutralize ammonia and thus reduce odour. As any cat owner can attest, odour reduction is a definite plus.

Our clumping (or ‘scoopable’) cat litter is made with a clay called sodium bentonite. The advantage of clumping litter is its convenience. When the bentonite gets wet, it hardens and clumps together. Just a couple of scoops, and the litter box is waste-free once again.

Deciding which one to use is largely a matter of personal choice. All our litter options are formulated to be as low in dust as possible. Non-clumping litter performs slightly better for odour reduction, but it’s hard to beat clumping litter for easy litter box maintenance. Please note: kittens under 4 months of age should always use non-clumping litter, as ingestion of clumping litter can be hazardous to their health.
