RE:RE:RE:Biden: $15.5 billion more to help Big 3 convert to EV'sObscure....
When I read some of the posts here and the one that you responded to, I am reminded of my youthful ignorance and lack of respect for people with much more experience and knowledge than I had at the time.
Fortunately for me, I learned quite by coincidence, the value of listening to people who had the wisdom of time served in their favour. 41 years ago, almost to the day, I was at an Oil and Gas Convention in Calgary. Jack Gallagher, the CEO of Dome Petroleum was giving a presentation on the company plans for the Beaufort Sea. Jack was a charasmatic speaker and was very successful in getting investment money and pumping the stock price of Dome Pete. I was enthralled by his presentation.
By chance sitting next to me was this grizzled old man. When Jack was finished, this old man said to me "Jack has norhing up there but salt water". I could have sluffed off this old guy but something inside me said "wait". So asked him a simple question "How do you know that?" Turns out that this old man had been in the oil industry for over 45 years and was part of the team that made the first discovery of oil in Saudi Arabia in 1938. He said that since then he has studied every major oil discovery and been involved in many of them and knew lots about oil geology. He drew me a simplified illustration of what Jack's "deposits"looked like (basically a bell curve) and said that there was a little oil in the sides but the fat part of the deposit was just salt water. I asked him what he thought I should do and he simply said "Bet against Jack".
I followed his advice and made a lot of money and in the process gained a respect for people who have been around for a while and seen lots of things so that in reality not a lot of what is going today is really new to them (they have seen it all before). More importantly, I started listening more carefully to others who had been around for long time and were willing to share their knowledge and ask for nothing in return. Over the years this approach has paid off for me.
Rightly or wrongly, I think most of the people who read posts here have learned that lesson but there are few that still haven't learned and think they know more than they really do.
