Wide-scale public awareness and concern about the dangers of smoking occured with the release of the US Surgeon General's report back in the mid-60's, and yet the US states only started litigation against Big Tobacco a full three decades later, which led to the Master Settlement Agreement in the late 90's. Makes you wonder why it took the government so long to take legal action... no?

Public awareness of the threats of global warming rose to prominence back in the 90's largely with adoption of the Kyoto Protocol. The California lawsuit against Big Oil is now filed, interestingly also about three decades later. I expect many other states to follow in short order, just as was the case with Big Tobacco.

Government is not stupid. It bides its time. It waits for the evidence to continue to accumulate until it is overhwelmingly favorable to a victory. You can bet your bootie the government will make every legal effort to extract a massive windfall from the perceived and actual damage done by Big Oil, just as it did with Big Tobacco. Of course, oil will not be banned. The world is addicted to it, just as it is addicted to tobacco.

I expect Big Oil to fight this battle tooth and nail all the way to the SCOTUS. And the climate change consensus pumped relentlessly by the mainstream media will be challenged as it has never been challenged before. Gonna need alot of popcorn for this show.

i think it's about money. When the time is right and money pot is big enough, lawyers will smell out the opportunities. In my opinion, smokers have no rights to sue for damages as cigarette/cigar are FDA approved food products, same goes for alcohol that caused uncount damages from drunk driving, or diseases from eating junk foods. As you said, health risk from consuming these products are well known and publicized. (Big Pharma take this to a new level, they get blanket waiver from lawsuit on their product side effect, take the covid19 vaccine, it is nearly impossible to sue for damages).

It is quite hard to tie petroleum usage to global warming, now relabelled as climate change. Volcanoes spew massive amount GHG, cows produces methane, even humans exhales CO2 and GHG from solid waste byproduct.  How much climate change is atttributed to oil/gas companies? No way O/G is effecting all climate change.   It seem Oil/gas companies are the few bastion of entity with deep pockets that lawyers would love to join in for the chase of money.   Another one is black reparations. almost every americans have some blackness in their DNA.
