RE:BHP

RE:BHPInteresting coincidence this morning. GLTA

BHP to sell its 50% stake in Daunia and Blackwater to Whitehaven for up to $4.1bn in cash

Our view: This transaction albeit probably will be deemed by the market to have occurred at a relatively modest price does provide some intangible value for BHP. 1) This increases the asset quality and margin position of the remaining met coal business which potentially translates into a better multiple over time. 2) The sale provides a clean exit in one transaction. 3) The forward capital to be spent at these mines can now be reallocated throughout the portfolio to higher return. 4) The c. $2.0bn in proceeds will allow for BHP to reduce net debt which is towards the upper end of the $5-$15bn range. We therefore see this deal as neutral, especially considering the scale of value leakage would be minimal within BHP’s current $146bn market cap.
