Loblaws installing 16 EV charging stalls at Fortinos Geez, what timing. I can't make this up.
It looks like the Fortinos grocery store chain has a deal in place to roll out Tesla Superchargers in front of their 23 stores located in the GTA and Hamilton. While 23 stores is not a lot, Fortinos is owned by Loblaws (2,444 stores including a number of well known stores such as Dominion) so the Fortinos announcement might just be the tip of the iceberg.
What does this mean for SU?
Loblaws is the big dog when it comes to grocery store chains in Canada. They have now dipped their toe into the EV charging business with Tesla.
How long will it be before Sobeys (#2 - 1500 stores) and Metro (#3) offer a similar service in order to remain competive? Both grocery chains are huge and have the $ to make it happen in a hurry.
How many Canadians live close to a large grocery store? Most of us.
Walmart has already announced it is opening its own line of EV charging stalls at its locations.
The closest Costco to where I live already has EV chargers as does the Canadian Tire store down located within a a couple of blocks of Costco.
Will customers still fill up their cars with gas when they can plug into EV chargers at a fraction of the cost while they are shopping?
I expect the big box stores will be offering free charging by the end of this decade.
Is anyone still wondering why Suncor couldn't find a buyer for its 1,500 Petro Canada stations?
The big dog box store companies have recognized the future of transportation and are doing something about it. They have the financial strength to make it happen and they will be competing for who can get it done first.
