Wasted gasolineThe US National lab at Berkley determined a few years ago that gasoline powered cars (not trucks or buses) in China consume about 54% of their gasoline while in traffic congestion. In the US it is only 25%. Together, China (3.8 million BPD) and the US (8.8 million BPD) consume 12.6 million BPD of gasoline and waste 4.2 million BPD just sitting idle in traffic. To make just the amount of gasoline that is wasted sitting in traffic requires about 9 million BPD of oil (the rest goes to diesel, jet fuel, chemicals, etc). This is about 3 TIMES THE TOTAL PRODUCTION OF THE ALBERTA Oil SANDS. What is even more absurd is that the cars powered by gasoline use only about 35% of the energy in each barrel of gasoline. China and the US together have only 40% of the cars on the planet.
