At best this can be usefull as small scale H2 generator, for  military use for ex.
Yes it does not require electricity...assuming that the " special " silicium alloys have been prepared up-stream using ... electricity!
Very similar to the stuff you can buy from outdoor sport stores or from the military to heat your boots and gloves in the winter.
Which use similar principle.
Al also used for similar applications.
Nothing to writi home imo.
