The NDP have given the Trudeau government until March 1 to table pharmacare legislation in the House of Commons.
Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, leader Jagmeet Singh claimed the Liberals are proposing a plan that sides with Big Pharma rather than Canadians.
“So far, we’ve seen some positive movement, but we’re not where we need to be yet,” he said.
The NDP leader said they also want birth control and diabetes drugs to be covered under pharmacare.
If the Liberals do not meet the March 1 deadline, Singh said his party will end their pact with the party.
“There will no longer be an agreement in place and the Liberals can no longer count on or take our support for granted. We will go vote-to-vote,” said Singh.
That would leave the door open to the minority Liberal government falling before the next scheduled election in 2025.
Speaking about the importance of national pharmacare, Singh said one in four Canadians are currently skipping medication because they cannot afford it.
