RE:Trudope carbon tax is like a strawberry dip in p…oopTheoretically the carbon tax is a good idea in the sense that it changes the relative price of oil products (Econ 101)

The problems are...

1.... there are no real or practical substitutes 

2... the tax is a regressive tax - having a greater effect on poor 

3....the rebate is political and accomplishes nothing except possibly political but that was good for the first year only

4.... the accounting is not transparent and we have to take Trudeau's statement that it revenue neutral and if anything that is likely to be a lie just like they said the GST was revenue neutral 

Personally, I would have less trouble with a carbon tax if the money was used for direct energy savings like public transit,  home insulation subsidies and rural electricity subsidies to name a few
