ACC (Stellantis/Mercedes): New battery technology (LFP) "At the beginning of June, ACC Secretary General Matthieu Hubert spoke to the regional newspaper "Rheinpfalz" about a "pause": "Before we invest, and we are talking about billions, we have to answer the question of what kind of battery cell technology the market requires," Hubert told the newspaper. By the end of this year or the beginning of 2025, it should be clear what will happen next in Kaiserslautern. ACC does not want to comment on the future of the Gigafactory until then, the company currently says.
New batteries in focus
The focus is now on the cell chemistry of car batteries. European manufacturers have so far relied primarily on nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries, which promise a comparatively long range. The first ACC plant in France also produces such NMC batteries.
The competition from China, on the other hand, has been relying on lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP) for some time. "These do not contain nickel or cobalt and are therefore cheaper," says battery researcher Weymann. The cost pressure on European manufacturers is now so great that LFP batteries are becoming increasingly relevant here too. According to media reports, ACC also wants to address this issue.
"The hope is that ACC may even produce here with less energy and perhaps without critical raw materials.""

It will not be the only gigafactory to be converted to LFP!
