Silver lining? Only approx 2% haz material left containment
Silver lining? Only approx 2% haz material left containmentCould have been so much worse and unfortunately, until actual numbers can be calculated by those with boots on the ground, its going to be difficult to determine an actionable remediation plan.
“Kelly Constable, the Yukon government's director of mineral resources, said about four million tonnes of material were released in the slide, about two million of which escaped containment.” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/yukon-government-update-heap-leach-victoria-gold-eagle-mine-1.7254359 Although any spillage is concerning, if only 2 million tonnes of ore escaped containment, then I would assume getting that 2 million tonnes contained would be priority number 2, right after the key component of accurate water shed sampling. In there somewhere would also have to include risk mitigation from further slide activity, and rain water site contamination.
When considering reports of the HLP containing 92 million tonnes of ore, 2 million tonnes should be manageable if they can mitigate the other concerns
“A technical report on the Victoria Gold website says the primary heap-leach pad can hold up to 92 million tonnes of ore.” https://www.vicnews.com/news/first-nation-wants-halt-to-yukon-mining-after-gold-mine-failure-7425991
