Another new tech using NatGas to make SAGD SteamERA funded another new project showcasing new tech using NatGas to make SAGD Steam
The ibexTM steam generator prototype will be modified for continuous operation and tested in the lab and in the field with live fluids at a thermal oil sands operator site. The proprietary contactor will also be scaled up to provide key optimization data for the design of the full-scale facility. The aim is to safely and reliably produce steam, solvent and bitumen from a live emulsion feed source, and observe and record key operating performance parameters that will validate reliability, operability, and environmental footprint and provide confidence to proceed to a demonstration scale facility in 2025.
The ibexTM steam generator directly contacts the reservoir produced oil/water emulsion with a recirculating stream of hot bitumen that is heated through a conventional natural gas fired oil heater but could also be heated by Net Zero emissions sources like nuclear power if available. All emulsion derived water is converted to steam and recycled into the reservoir (without having to go to a Central facility).
