Once the energy densities stop increasing significantly then they will have to start finer tweaking that will get them to the best state they can get to in that point in time (but R&D will be continuous).
The energy density is only one part of the equation. Degradation is one of the others and we have not seen results of testing more than 200 cycles. That testing will likely result in determining which applications will be best suited for different types of batteries.
