Any data to back this up?

Where does Reitmans report TOTAL VOLUME TRANSACTIONS?

Ttm Sales are down y/y in nominal terms so by definition it is also down in volume too.

Take sales and subtract the inflation rate for the industry and you arrive at "real" sales. Put another way, this tells us the total number of transactions if we strip inflation out of the picture.
