Well I can write a book about my life and emigration but let me just highlight my smuggling activity . In October 1989 I came to Canada and was placed in St.Catharines. Came with my wife right into nasty real estate recession when unemployment in St.Catharines was about 20% . Paid by government rent plus food ( equivalent to welfare) in mean time attending ESL school. Worked in Austria under the table to buy car in order to find a job. By the way owning the car was illegal by government rules. Bought the car wrote driving test in Polish language and found my first job cleaning offices. Lady in Manpower said it is ok as long you make less than $100 a week. Six months passed and I got another job picking fruit on the farm with Mexicans,Jamaicans . In mean time went to school to study materials and computer drafting and looking for job since I am a mechanical engineer. Found the job as a CNC machine operator . Owner told me to ask Manpower to pay $3.50/hour in order to get hired but lady didn't deliver besides I knew how to program those machines back then. Believe or not lady from Manpower saw me driving my car and called me in her office. She asked me how much I paid for car plus insurance ( $ 3000 ) and she said the amount will be added to my government loan where we already owed the plane tickets coming from Austria. She said to sign. I told her to f off refused to sign suggested rather go to jail. She cut us off from all government support not eligible to apply for welfare. Month later found the job in Toronto in paper company got laid off in 3 months for a year.
In April Mulroney passed the budget bringing cigarettes prices to $ 37 per carton. Finally I got part time job as I was working on the farm and yes I became a criminal smuggling cigarettes to make living.
