Wound healing: urgent requirement for healthy aging

Wound healing: urgent requirement for healthy aging

Introduction

In 2015, the World Health Organization World Report on Aging and Health highlighted an urgent requirement for healthy aging strategies. The skin was identified as an area requiring greater attention with the aim of maintaining good health throughout the lifespan (   ). With increasing age, the skin undergoes changes in appearance and function, referred to as intrinsic or chronologic aging, and these are exaggerated by exposure to external factors such as UVR. In intrinsic aging, degradation and disorganization of collagen and elastic fibers in the dermis and at the dermalepidermal junction result in decreased skin elasticity and tensile strength (   ;    ). Alongside this, deterioration of epidermal cellcell junctions contributes to greater skin fragility in the elderly (   ). Cutaneous staphylococcal and streptococcal infections are frequent in the elderly owing to a decline in the skin’s barrier function and its immune capabilities (   ); furthermore, wound healing is impaired, which exacerbates the risk of infection  ).
