The point about the example of Mercedes spending 14 BILLION euros on predominantly battery research and many other companies spending billions is that commercializing novel technologies and materials is not easy.  HPQ still has ways to go towards commercialization.  And if you do a little bit of Googling on the subject matter, you won't have a clue of all the other measures that are discussed about in research papers to understand all the variables that are required to have a viable product.  This is not to criticize what HPQ is doing but simply to point out that nothing is in the bag yet and there's ways to go.
