The president of the Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Geologists of Mexico (AIMMGM), Rubn del Pozo Mendoza, expressed his confidence in the performance of the Mining Commission of the LXVI Legislature in the Senate of the Republic and said that it will be convenient for it to serve as an efficient means with the Legislative Branch to give mining its fair dimension for the development of the country. He stressed that open-pit mining should be regulated but not stigmatized, in order to continue maintaining Mexico in the prominent place it has as the main producer of essential minerals for the development of renewable energy, technology, medicines, transportation, furniture,

After attending the installation session of the aforementioned commission held in the “Ifigenia Martnez ” Protocol Room, the leaders of the mining sector held a meeting with the senator for Morena, Lorenia Iveth Valles Sampedro, president of the established commission.

The leader of AIMMGM commented at the meeting that many people easily talk about the need to ban open-field mining, but they do not know that the productive practices in Mexican mining are the best applied in the world.

He said it is necessary to provide certainty to national and foreign entrepreneurs interested in participating in the sector, because many investors have emigrated to other countries where they have better conditions for investing.

He also argued that banning open-pit mining would destroy a strategic sector for the national economy and put Mexico's mining sovereignty at risk by turning it into a country dependent on imports.

“Mining is an activity that has shaped the history of humanity, that has driven technological progress and that today continues to be a driving force of economic development . In Mexico, our mineral wealth represents a unique opportunity to generate quality jobs, attract foreign investment, and strengthen our public finances, ” he said.

I have added that mining is a sector that works with the highest environmental and social standards, always prioritizing dialogue and collaboration with all the actors involved in the sector and the competent authorities.

"Our commitment extends to more than 696 communities where we operate, benefiting more than 3 million families who depend on this noble activity," I added.

The Mining Commission was opened by the leaders of Mujeres WIM Mxico, the Mexican Mining Chamber, the College of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Geologists of Mexico, and the Sonora Mining Cluster, among others, who participated in a friendly dialogue and exchange of ideas to find solutions to the problems affecting the industry.

The Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Geologists of Mexico is a non-profit organization founded in 1951 and made up of approximately 3,600 members distributed in 37 Districts. The members participate in mining companies operating in Mexico, in companies that provide machinery, equipment, services and supplies to the mining-metallurgical industry, and in the public sector, as well as in Schools and Faculties of Earth Sciences.
