When discussion boards degenerate into a steady stream of comments about 'Bashers', 'Shorties', and 'Hit the ignore button' (to eliminate exposure to inconvenient facts) is when a lot of people are not doing their homework. I never put anyone on ignore except for example when two individuals get into some personal dispute, don't discuss the topic, litter the board, and don't let it go. I only ignore two of them, on another board.
Disputed claims or statements can be refuted with facts and research, and often both sides can learn something from each other to the benefit of all. That's supposed to be the purpose of all these discussions.
Otherwise it's just reflex reaction and emotion.
