People in Toronto need more rental housing now. So, we’re taking the steps to make it happen.

Today, City Council took bold action to help kick start the building of 7,000 rental homes. Housing starts in September this year are down 81% compared to last year.

Why? The short answer is that the math doesn’t work for new rental homes. So we’re stepping in to get things moving.

How?

1 Builders will submit their plans to build projects that include affordable housing and we’ll waive development charges to help get shovels in the ground in the next year. We need these projects to get built as soon as possible.

2 We’re lowering property taxes on all new purpose-built rental homes to encourage lower rents and help spur further construction going forward.

3 We’re calling on the federal and provincial governments to step up to help out further. With their participation, instead of 7,000 new rentals, we can build 20,000.
