They've recently spent a little money to try to prolong production by moving underground but it's getting pretty obvious after a hundred plus years, it's getting played out.
When Rio has no production issues at the mine (they've had a few over the past six or seven years) the mine produces between 160,000-200,000 tons a year (ballpark, copper only). They will lose that production after closure (not to mention the gold, silver, and molybdenum).
As Sandeep pointed out during the latest video presentation all of Rio's other investments deal with the Neuton technology and sulfide deposits.
