I believe it happens frequently. Posting false and misleading information to manipulate a stock's share price is a reality, whether it's for some entity or for personal gain. Proving it is another thing. It's hard to prove but doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Hedge funds don't want to be caught with their hands in the cookie jar and risk their reputations.
