The HammerDown open pit mine has a grade of 4.6 grams per ton which is among the top decile of open pit grades.
Keats Main once Keats Trench is included could have a grade 20 grams or more.
Mining costs are much lower for open pit mining relative to Underground.
The rule of thumb used to be that the UG grade should be twice that of the Surface grade in order to have the same profitability .
Anyway, here in NL all of our gold mines have been open pit.
Few of these have been drilled below 150 meters and being orogenic, it would not be unexpected to find gold below these shallow pits..
