RE:RE:RE:GE Hitachi and Aecon make way in the UK - The Times

So four companies—GE Hitachi, Holtec, Rolls-Royce SMR, and Westinghouse—have entered final negotiations to secure contracts for the construction and operation of SMRs in the UK with Great British Nuclear (GBN), which aims to select one or more designs by mid-2024. Contracts are expected to be awarded shortly thereafter. These SMRs are projected to begin operations in the 2030s, contributing to the UK’s goal of 24 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050.

Aecon will be involved in the deployment of GE Hitachi’s BWRX-300 SMRs  in the UK if GE Hitachi is selected based on the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GE Hitachi to provide nuclear construction, specialized fabrication, and project management services for future SMR deployment in the UK. This partnership builds on Aecon’s role as the constructor of the first grid-scale BWRX-300 SMR in Ontario, Canada, and its extensive experience with nuclear infrastructure projects, including large-scale refurbishment efforts in North America.

Given Aecon’s significant involvement in SMR projects and its collaboration with GE Hitachi, it is highly likely the company will play a key role if GE Hitachi secures a UK SMR contract.

We may also be involved in Poland and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on SMR projects, albeit there are no public references indicating that Aecon is directly collaborating with GE Hitachi on TVA’s Clinch River site. This said, TVA is actively partnering with GE Hitachi, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), and Synthos Green Energy to deploy the BWRX-300 SMR technology. These collaborations focus on standardizing and deploying the reactor design across multiple jurisdictions.
