RE:GE Vernova, one of yesterday's big NYSE gainers, is in Note Westinghouse is larger than GE Hitachi (Vernova's nuclear division); 6000 employees vs 3000. IMO Westinghouse has the lead in conventional full-size reactors, having the best reactor design (AP1000), while Vernova has one of the leading SMR designs (BWXT3000).
IMO, conventional full-size reactors will carry the day. IMO the downsides of SMRs are greatly understated; e.g., you're irradiating the surroundings of the reactor in either case, generating radioactive waste that has to be stored somewhere afterwards. Further, I don't see utilities being allowed to cart reactors all over the countryside without regulation. I think there is a big future market for nuclear power - absolutely - but the more conservative approach is the one that seems likely to actually happen. Extend the lifetimes of existing plants, and build more of the safest, best-understood existing designs with well-engineered upgrades.
Bottom line I think Westinghouse has the better position, BUT I would keep a running tally on new signed contracts - Westinghouse versus Vernova/Hitachi - to see how it's going.
All IMO, do your own DD.
