Averaging down is only working because we've been in a very lengthy bull market. Unless the business cycle has been repealed, we will eventually experience another vicious and prolonged sell-off that could last for years. Today's darlings will become tomorrow's has beens. Think about INTC and CSCO that STILL haven't regained their highs from 24 years ago! Not to mention the hundreds of former high flyers that simply disappeared.
Yes, like many things, DCA'ing works - until it doesn't. And when it doesn't, dip buyers get wiped out, and it's usually the investors who think they are smart and have the market all figured out that end up suffering the worst. That's just how the system works.
