Are you kidding me..!! Pipelines have many above ground valves and service points that WILL FREEZE in winter.. 
"cracked engines".. LMAO.. do you realize the oil sits in the "oil pan" which is only maybe 1/2 full when the engine is off..!! 
Carry on with guessing at how the world works... too funny..!!
