oil or water....
oil or water....If they are just drilling ahead without LWD, they know if they are in a predominately oil or water column. Samples may show signs of flouresence or oil staining, which indicates hydrocarbons present. If no oil staining is present, it simply means no hyrodarbons are present at the depth they are drilling. If staining is present, it indicates oil is there, but the overall water saturation is still unknown. At the same time they are looking at the samples, they are taking mud gas cuts. This aids in the overal daily evaluation of the well prognosis, but does not give a definative evaluation of what is there - simply what may be present. LWD (logging while drilling) can provide additional information, but is not in itself a definative measurement of what is there. Drill ahead, log, and evaluate. Only then will you know for sure. Barrhead, do you concur?
