Sonus Opens in China

Sonus Opens in ChinaSonus Opens In China By boston.internet.com Staff Sonus Networks (NASDAQ:SONS), a Westford, Mass., maker of telecommunication equipment, has opened an office in Bejing and signed a partnership with Chinese systems integrator Photonic Bridges. "We are seeing a great deal of interest among Chinese service providers for next-generation voice solutions such as those offered by Sonus, particularly because carriers can build out their infrastructure and deliver a wide range of services much more easily and cost-effectively than with legacy circuit equipment," said Gary Rogers, a Sonus vice president. Sonus' new direct operations, led by former Juniper sales executive Michael Li, will serve a rapidly growing market, including new high speed network operators as well as established service providers. According to the China Ministry of Information Industry, China has the second largest telephone system in the world with approximately 172 million fixed line subscribers, and an estimated growth rate of approximately 38 percent per year for the next 10 years. The penetration of voice over Internet protocol in China is also expected to increase. Probe Research estimates that the number of VoIP minutes of use originating in China will grow from 7.3 billion minutes in 2001 to more than 250 billion minutes in 2006. Shares of SONS shot up 0.94, or 20 percent, to 5.49 on the news. In the last 52 weeks, the issue has ranged from 2.25 to 46.5. December 18, 2001
