How does 802.11 differ from 802.11a?

Dumb question perhaps, but i would like to know if someone out there can give me the quick answer on how 802.11 differs from 802.11a and how all of this may or may not affect wi-lan? Curious. I was unaware that Cisco has dropped development of its competing V-OFDM system. According to the post on here, it is because they do not see a future for fixed wireless.
