RE: Internet not the Cheapest Source !
RE: Internet not the Cheapest Source !Hi TM
This article is very narrow in scope. It does not say if it is comparing TA's with online TA's such as Travelocity, ebookers, Expedia... or whether it includes low cost airlines with their own websites. It also didn't say how far in advance tickets were being booked / compared. Low cost airlines start very cheap for the first few seats to more expensive than regular airlines when the plane is almost full.
It also fails to mention that GDS's have lost a large proportion of their business to internet only operations down form 95% market share to arounf 70%, in many cases alternate distribution channels sell direct to the public and are not available to TA's or are available with zero commission.
Finally, it is all well and good to say TA's can get cheaper deals, but the cost structure of conventional airlines paying margin to consolidator and TA's and GDS means that they are not profitable, look at US Airways, United and other pending chapter 11's in the states, then look at your low cost Southwest, Jet Blue, Easyjet and Ryanair's who are making substancial profits, these low prices offered to TA's by the big airlines are not sustainable. They are losing money and marklet share.
GDS's have lost around 25% of the market in under 3 years. I still use TA's for last minute bookings or transatlantic. Almost everything else where a low cost airline flies, I go direct because in Europe at least, TA's can no longer compete.
That aside, if SCS can get even a small percentage of GDS business, and help GDS's expand into new areas of business, we still stand to do very well. I appreciate your efforts to highlight business opportunities.
I have my fingers crossed that the deals with the GDS's go through and we do begin to see significant rise in booking numbers. Increased interest in stock hopefully bodes well.
