Separately, the authority said it plans in October to issue an approximate $809
million request for proposals for 246 new rail cars and 94 overhauled cars, or an
entirely new fleet, for the PATH train system.
The new cars would not be manufactured and delivered until May 2006 to 2010.
The PATH system carries as many as 180,000 commuters across the Hudson River
every day.
The last time international train manufacturers, including Bombardier Inc.
(Toronto:BBDb.TO - News), Kawasaki Heavy Industies Ltd (Tokyo:7012.T - News) and
Alstom (Paris:ALSO.PA - News), competed intensely for a lucrative subway car
contract in the area was in July 2002.
That was when the New York State agency that runs New York City's subways chose
France's Alstom to supply 660 subway cars. The agency said it believed the $961
million contract was the largest in the world.
