GOLDS: DENVER GOLD SHOW PREVIEW – POSITIVE CLIMATE TO RAISE INTEREST IN JUNIOR COMPANIES.
Analysts and investors will be attending the Mining Investment Forum in Denver on Sept. 22-24 to hear presentations from the world’s leading and emerging gold producers on their growth prospects and strategy. With gold having rebounded from its low of $255 in 2001 to the current $375 per ounce level, we expect good attendance and heightened interest in the junior exploration and development companies, as these have had the best price appreciation this year (up 61% versus the seniors’ 37% and the mid-tiers’ 9% gains). In addition we expect some interest in the presentation of the new Equity Gold Trust (GLD: NYSE), which provides a more direct investment in bullion, and there will likely also be some talk among investors about the Washington Agreement, which comes up for renewal next September. We do not anticipate much in the way of groundbreaking news from the senior and mid-tier companies. In the seniors, Newmont is expected to present economic parameters on its development projects (which we have been anticipating for over a year). We expect Barrick to update us on its development projects and Placer Dome to provide further insights into its East Africa mine acquisition. In the mid-tier group, we may expect exploration results from Cambior, Goldcorp and Meridian.
