Rowan Gorilla VFuture of offshore gas find in question
Friday, December 05, 2003
Politics may determine the future of EnCana's Deep Panuke natural gas find off Nova Scotia, but there is a sense of optimism among workers on a rig near Sable Island.
Just a few weeks ago the Rowan Gorilla V found gas for EnCana at a well about 250 kilometres southeast of Halifax.
The rig's senior manager, Al Snow, says doubters aside, he's seen enough gas through 24 years of work to believe there's a future.
However, he adds the politics and the regulations of it are beyond the worker's control.
Executives from EnCana have suggested the project partly hangs on negotiations with the federal and provincial governments on streamlining regulations.
Nevertheless rig roughneck Johny Smith is also optimistic, saying he's seen more good holes than dry.
And rig electrician John Frame also hopes the latest finds will be sufficient.
He says the last few wells drilled look very enticing.
