This figure maybe net pay if all of the sand encountered in the well bore exceeds certain porosity and water saturation cut offs then it is called net pay. If within the sand there are thin lenses of sand which do not make the cut offs then the net pay is less than the 20 feet. Sometimes when a sand reservoir has portions which exceed the cut off and other portions that are less than the cutoff, some people will say the reservoir encountered has 20 feet of "gross pay". If you see this term then you can assume that all the sand thickness reported is not net pay.
