RE: More News

RE: More NewsWell, I followed my tip as well. I did it with pen and paper in hand. Most of the 5 minute clip on RailPower was familiar, so I will just summarize some of the commentary, the essence of the message and a couple of things that struck me as funny and/or effective. The clip was part of an hour or so show on technology. All of it was quite interesting. Before the first ad they showed a clip of the Green Goat and said "Find out how this little shunter is contributing to the greening of the planet." Before the second ad they showed a smiling, enthusiastic and down to earth Frank Donnely in railway engineer over-alls saying "This is the best application of a hybrid, bar none", with the emphasis on "bar none." I have to say that Frank came across great because he looked like such a wholesome guy. Following this little 5 second clip the commentator said "The Green Goat ... it really works." I thought this little clip with Frank was a hoot and was glad to see it again in the main 5 minute clip. The introduction to this main clip went something like, "Greenhouse gas emissions are responsible for climate change." There was a description of the basic technology and a comment to the effect that the Green Goat, unlike traditional emission spewing locomotives, is a good neighbour. The commentator noted that traditional locomotives spend most of their time idling. Apparently they work in short spurts. Compared to traditional shunters the Green Goat reduction of fuel use and emissions is "phenomenal". Though the Green Goat generator is diesel, just like traditional shunter locomotives, its generator is only 1/20th the size of the traditional diesel engine, hence far, far cleaner. Because of its excellent performance and environmental and fuel consumption benefits, the commentator noted that the Green Goat was getting lots of attention. The scene then switched to J.S. Biln who, Blurr, is the one who said that U.S. railroads have been ordered to cut emmissions by 1/3 in the next two years. That's what I heard as well. The commentator then said that using a Green Goat, I presume instead of a traditional shunter, is like taking 700 cars of the road, in terms of pollution reduction. I assume he meant, but do not know, 700 cars for the lifetime of Green Goat use. Finally, I think it was noted, I think by Donnely again, that the Green Goat has enough stamina and power to pull commeter trains out of the city (though not to be a long haul locomotive itself). On this latter application he said that RailPower is a few years away but "stay tuned." Its nice to see that RailPower captured the imagination of a respectable and discerning T.V. station like the Discovery Channel.
