Insight Media Announces “Best Buzz” Awards for SID
Insight Media, the leader in microdisplay-based market research, is proud to announce that Sony Corporation and Brillian Corporation have won our ‘Best Buzz” Awards for the Society for Information Display (SID) conference and exposition, which was held in Seattle, Washington in the third week of May. Sony wins for its new innovative “Wavelength Selective” front-projection screen technology, and Brillian wins for its demonstration of two top-quality 1920 x 1080 resolution LCOS-RPTVs.
Sony’s new front-projection screen is made on a polymer substrate with a black light-absorbing layer. On top of this, a special “wavelength selective” layer is added that essentially provides high reflectance in the red, green and blue parts of the spectrum to produce a high-contrast, wide viewing angle screen. Such technology could help open up the consumer front-projection market where ambient light washout of the image is a major impediment to rapid adoption.
Brillian gets its award for showing two 1920 x 1080 LCOS-RPTV demonstrators using two different color management systems. One featured the UltreX-3 color core from JDSU and the other the Vikuiti core from 3M Optical Systems. Both produced sharp, crisp, beautiful images on 65-inch demonstrators, setting a high standard for 1080p performance in a microdisplay-based RPTV.
Receiving “Good Buzz” Awards are:
* Kodak for the unveiling of its linear spatial light modulator called Grating Micro Electromechanical System (GEMS) for use in laser projection systems
* Philips Research Labs for a paper (#26.2) describing the lifetime optimization of UHP lamps
* Philips LCOS Microdisplay Systems for its single-panel, scrolling prism, 1920 x 1080 resolution LCOS-RPTV
* iFire for the demonstration of a 34-inch inorganic thick-film dielectric electroluminescent (TDEL) prototype TV with XGA resolution
* JDSU for the improved performance of its LCOS and DLP-RPTV demonstrators
* Cambridge University for a much-improved “Flat Projection TV” that uses acrylic to pipe a projector’s image to a built-in screen
* Lumus for the demonstration of a see-through viewfinder for head-mounted displays
* Samsung Electronics for the demonstration of its 80-inch PDP-HDTV with 1920 x 1080 resolution
* Samsung Electronics for is five-color DLP-RPTV demonstrator
* Toppan, DNP and Jenmar Visual Systems for three papers describing new screen technologies
There were no “Buzz Off” Awards for the SID show.
In selecting these ‘Buzz” Awards, Insight Media scoured the trade show floor and attended a number of technical presentations. It is what struck us, and others we talked to, as cool, interesting, provocative or exciting during the show. It is what we were asked most about and what we talked most about.
