RE: sabres news

RE: sabres news "Just curious(technically speaking) will SCS's technology be any factor in this equation between Sabre/Air Canada? thanks!" No. The airlines created the GDS's originally to distribute their airfare inventory, then sold them off as independent compnaies, and some are now going back into the business, either with thier own web sites, or joint ventures with other airlines (effectively web only GDS's) such as opodo. Airlines have been distributing through GDS's directly from the beginning. SCS first opportunit was to try a sell dicounted airfares over the GDS's. Because of rules in place discounted prices could not be displayed or sold directly by the airlines, all they could do was put an asterix beside the price to say the flight had consolidator seats available on it. TA's then had to phone or look at faxes from consolidators. SCS put this online on solarnet, a separate location on each GDS, but the internet was beginning to take off and provided cheap universal ways for consolidators to distruibute inventory themselves. SCS still has the links to GDS, but is repositioning itself as an inventory hub (Jet's 5th GDS). Other Internet only offerings are doing the same, and as rules relax on GDS's becuase of internet comnpettion, they are now able to display more discounted prices and are lookig to take advantage oif the internet and broaded the inventory that they sell. An industry in total flux.
