I listened to a re-run of yesterday's session on Canadian Technology companies with Jim O'Connell. Bob McWhirter of the Northwest Specialty Innovations Fund identified his top 3 picks and provided input on technology plays from callers. One caller asked about VMS. McWhirter's response: we hold it as a small percentage of our portfolio, its highly speculative, but we like what we see and they may have a chance in the mobile wireless industry. McWhirter is very positive on companies specializing in wireless handheld devices such as SW and RIM and suggested that new directions in the industry on behalf of NT also look positive once some of their current accounting issues are out the way. Interesting to see a penny stock such as VMS (albeit a low percentage) in the portfolio of this fund given the company it shares with the likes of SW, RIM and ATY.
