Phase 2

Phase 2Aber Diamond Corp.'s Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. has begun phase 2 of the Yellowknife multiplex arena project is progressing ahead of schedule. Progress to date suggests that the multiplex's second ice surface will be complete and available for use in early December, several weeks ahead of schedule. "The construction team is working well together and very pleased that they can have the community skating there before Christmas," said Glenn Zelinski, Diavik's manager trades and labour force development. Phase 2 -- completion of the second pad -- is a partnership between Diavik, the City of Yellowknife, Facilities for Kids, contractors and many other local contributors. Through Diavik's voluntary participation as the project manager, construction of the facility will be accelerated by nearly two years, and costs will be considerably below those previously estimated. "I am certain the ice-user groups will be excited to be on the ice weeks earlier than anticipated. It is indeed a compliment to Diavik, Facilities for Kids, our community services staff and all those participating from our business community that this partnership has created such positive results in such a short time," said Yellowknife mayor Gordon Van Tighem. "Hopefully this project will become a model for future opportunities," he added.
