(MTb.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) , the smallest of Canada's four national wireless companies, reported a third-quarter profit on Wednesday as sales jumped 20 percent from a year earlier. The company behind the Fido mobile phone brand reported a profit of C$2.9 million, or 8 Canadian cents per share, in the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of C$5.1 million, or C$1.35 per share, a year earlier. Microcell, whose management has recommended a C$1.4 billion ($1.1 billion) takeover bid by larger rival Rogers Wireless Communications Inc. (RCMb.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) , said revenue rose to C$175.4 million from C$146.2 million. The Montreal-based company said it added 75,773 subscribers during the quarter, bringing its customer base to 1,275,094. Customer turnover rose to 2.8 percent from 2.6 percent. The average revenue per user, a key measure in the wireless sector, rose to C$44.24 in the quarter from C$39.98 last year. In September, the company forecast third-quarter service revenue of C$158 million. It also estimated a customer turnover rate of 3 percent with net subscriber additions of 70,000 and average revenue per user of C$43. ($1=$1.23 Canadian)
