Arnie in China...Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime trip Arnie..you are very fortunate. I've always enjoyed your comments on this board. Were you seeing the tower cranes around each city and town as we are told to believe? Did you get a feeling of compelling re-development? Where,(other than from cheap labour) are the Chinese producing income? There's lots of outsourced hi-tech jobs..which industries are fore-front?
Do you feel after your brief visit that China is the awakening giant that we all hear about? Are they really gobbling up oil and concrete/steel faster than can be supplied?. I'm aware that the gov't there is trying to curb growth, if for no other reason than to keep costs down, but more likely to maintain a semblance of order (and law).
Is growth there out of control?? I think that is an important element in this renaisance. It is not beyond impossibilty that upheaval in that society could manifest with growing capitalist fervour. I'm reading that the flux of people to urban centers there is unstoppable.
Did you see that?
I am not a world traveller, in fact , about 2 weeks from ( my peaceful place in BC) is about all I care to do. Gotta admire you for your journey and much thanks for your report from China.
Kind regards...Ken
