JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's Solidarity union said it planned to launch a strike against gold producers after wage talks reached an impasse on Monday.
Solidarity spokesman Reint Dykema told Reuters the decision was taken after gold firms failed to raise their wage offer on Monday. The larger National Union of Mineworkers was also expected to announce strike action later on Monday, he said.
Unions were denied permission on Friday by government mediators to call a strike, but it was expected to be granted on Monday, he added.
"The mediators said wait until today, but there was no improvement (in the wage offer) today, so there wouldn't be any issue for them to refuse the strike certificate," he said.
