MDN NORTHERN MINING: New Gold Discovery in The Tulawaka Area, Tanzania
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 29, 2005) - MDN NORTHERN MINING
(MINIERES DU NORD) (TSX:MDN) is pleased to announce a new gold discovery from
its recently completed first phase drilling campaign in the Tulawaka area,
Tanzania. MDN NORTHERN MINING has been actively exploring for gold in the area
immediately surrounding the Tulawaka project, where it has a 30% interest. The
Tulawaka gold mine started commercial production in March this year and had
produced 62,400 ounces of gold by the end of August.
MDN NORTHERN MINING completed a drilling campaign testing three targets.
Drilling was done with rotary air blast (RAB) and reverse circulation (RC)
techniques for a total of 5,092 m. This press release reports the results from
a target located in a Prospecting License optioned from Lakota Resources, some
25 km of the Tulawaka mine process plant. The target covers an area 1.3 km long
and 0.6 km wide and has been initially tested initially by four drill fences
comprising 34 holes for a total of 2,266 m. Holes were sited "heel-to-toe" on
the fences to give complete overlap, drilled at an angle of 60 degrees and to
an average depth of 70 m. Drill fences are spaced between 100-400 m from each
other. Because of the drilling techniques used, it is not possible to
accurately determine the true width and orientation of the mineralized
intersections. The best drill intersections from this target are summarized
below:

Samples from this drilling program were prepared and analyzed entirely by Humac
Laboratories in Tanzania. The anomalous results were subsequently independently
checked by the ALS Chemex laboratory in South Africa. The drilling program was
carried out under the direction of Geologist Brian Lloyd, supervised by Carlos
Bertoni, P.Geo., a Qualified Person under NI 43-101.
Results from the drilling of the remaining targets will be released shortly, as
they become available and have been verified. A follow-up drilling program is
being prepared to test not only the gold mineralization being discovered, but
also to probe two additional targets in other Prospecting Licenses. A map
showing the Company's current tenement interests in the Tulawaka area is
available on its web site (www.xnord.com).
The Company initially defined a number of exploration targets by studying all
the available information within a radius of 50 km from the Tulawaka mine.
These targets are being systematically tested using proven exploration
techniques. Soil geochemistry is used to determine the location of gold
mineralization in the lateritic profile, from which anomalies are defined.
Follow-up work with induced polarization/resistivity geophysical surveys
identifies geological structures and assists in the design of drilling
programs. Targets defined were previously completely unknown and this
exploration represents pioneering work for the area.
Carlos Bertoni, CEO of MDN NORTHERN MINING, stated: "In 2002 we decided to
launch our own exploration effort in the area surrounding the Tulawaka project,
confident that the local geological environment holds the potential to host
additional gold mineralization. Our objective has been to find new gold
deposits in the vicinity of the Tulawaka processing facility, and thus produce
gold from mines in which we will have a higher participation. These recent
drilling results are very encouraging and demonstrate that we are on the right
track. We are now busy preparing for our new drilling campaigns and look
forward to delivering more good news in the near future. We are building a
success story in East Africa, based on a strong mining asset, effective
exploration and professionalism in all aspects of our operations".
MDN NORTHERN MINING is a Montreal-based Canadian exploration company that holds
a 30% interest in the Tulawaka gold project and a majority interest in 25
adjacent mineral licenses in Tanzania, a majority interest in three licenses in
Eritrea, and other gold and base metal exploration interests in Quebec, Canada.
