CARMEL, Ind. -(Dow Jones)- ITT Educational Services Inc. 's (ESI) third-quarter profit climbed 86%, helped by growth in total enrollment.
In a press release Thursday, ITT said net income rose to $34.4 million, or 73 cents a share, from $18.5 million, or 39 cents a share, a year earlier. The latest period reflects special legal and other investigation costs of $3.9 million, while the year-ago period includes a net gain of $6 million.
Before items, earnings increased to $30.5 million, or 65 cents a share, from $ 24.5 million, or 52 cents a share. Wall Street, on average, expected ITT to earn 61 cents a share for the latest third quarter.
ITT said hurricanes in the Gulf Coast hurt total enrollment by about 450 students because of the closing of the St. Rose school in New Orleans.
The company plans to reopen the school at the start of the next academic quarter. It expects the temporary closure will lower earnings for the final quarter of 2005 by a penny a share, and cut 2006 profit by 4 cents a share.
