Some trivia relating to mining in the.......

arctic. Just out today,  Areva Recources Canada, a urainian project
80 klicks just west of Baker Lake has just submitted a draft copy of
an enviromental impact study to the Nunavut Impact Review Board
after 5 years of research and information gathering. Now the fun
part starts, the community meeetings and questions  concerning the
draft report..

Just the transalating into Inuktitut cost Areva close to a hlf a million $.
 ie: There are 3 catagories of transalating that is known in the trade;
whipped cream, mash potatoes and molasses in Febuary; technicle
reports like this type of report is definatly in the Molasses  area which
 $40 a page to transalate. Now all the enviromentalists, caribou/ wild-
life ; anti ming groups will get involved and stir things up adding more
costs to re-drafting the report. hee, hee ....... google Areva enviromental
impact study, etc. if you have nothing else to do cause this is instore for
AEI in the very near future.

Of the 29,025 responses to the census question concerning 'mother tongue', the most commonly reported languages were: 1. Inuktitut 20,185 69.54% 2. English 7,765 26.75% 3. French 370 1.27% 4. Inuinnaqtun 295 1.02% Only English and French were counted ...more

Nunavut has 3 official languages English, French & Inuktitut..Parents have a choice of sending their kids to entirly Inuktitutclasses during the primary grades( curriculum still being de-velopted for the higher grades) or English classes. Iqaluit is theonly Community with an entierly French school.The Nu G'ovt language commision is pushing for Inuktittut to bethe official working lanugage ...more

The 10,000 page Areva report is hitting the local news up here in the Arctic. To put it into prespective, the entire report fits into 2 carboard banker's boxes weighing approx. 40 pounds. Can you imagine the average joe off the street taking the time to read it? Maybe the stratagy is to so overwhelm the reader so that they will just skim through it  and go to the back summary which is ...more
