https://www.nunatsiaqonline.ca/stories/article/65674baffinland_slashes_scope_of_nunavuts_mary_river_project/ * Baffinland plans to reduce proposed production from 18 MTA to 3.5 MTA, and 3-month seasonal shipping only. The proposed massive ice-breaking ore carriers: not going to be built. Even Arcelormittal finds it difficult to deal with mining in Nunavut. The capex and operational ...more

Funny how Mr. Spindoctor interprets information....now where in the article does it mention difficulty of mining in the North....first phrase out of the article. In a bolt from the blue, the Baffinland Iron Mines Corp. told Nunavut regulators Jan. 10 they’ve slashed the scope of the Mary River iron project in response to slumping steel prices and rising borrowing costs. I guess you haven't ...more

The iron ore spot price is now $158.50 per tonne CFR. Even in a iron ore high price environment Baffinland has decided to slash the scope and capex of their project by 80%. It was a proposed $5 billion project, now it looks like a $1 billion project. * One rationale for Roche Bay: if Arcelor, which knows something about iron ore, is willing to build a massive iron ore project in Nunavut, then ...more

For the past few months I have refrained from commenting on HVAN posts. Given that he is not the coldest beer in the fridge, it seemed pointless to feed his need to provoke debate. However, I find myself drawn back in because of the lack of logic in his assertions. He drawns comparisons where there are none. He fails to fully explore all factors influencing decision-making. The cost to establish a ...more

You're right, Old Guy, the cost to establish infrastructure for ADV and AXI are not the same.  AXI's capex is higher. Both feasibility studies are now in and the numbers are clear: in terms of NPV, capex, IRR and opex, Roche Bay is a much worse project than Kami. * All the "optimization" in the world won't change that simple fact. AXI management is trying to optimize ...more

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2013/01/11/north-baffinland-plans-change.html Baffinland has to go jump through more hoops at the NIRB, even if they're downscaling the project and presumably decreasing environmental impact. Expect years of public reviews and hearings. The NIRB does not make things easy: *   "The Nunavut Impact Review Board issued a project certificate for ...more
